What Makes a Tile Shower Last 20 Years (And What Doesn't)

A tile shower can be one of the most beautiful and durable features in a home — or one of the most expensive repair jobs you'll ever face. The difference isn't usually the tile itself. It's everything behind it. For homeowners in Greenwood, Blanchard, and the western Caddo Parish area who are planning a bathroom renovation, this is the single most important thing to understand before you start.

The Myth of Tile as Waterproofing

Ceramic and porcelain tile is not waterproof — it's water-resistant. Water can and does penetrate through grout lines, around fittings, and at corners and transitions. Once water gets behind tile, it has nowhere to go. It saturates the substrate, promotes mold growth, and eventually causes tile to detach, grout to crack, and in serious cases, water damage to spread into adjacent walls and floors.

The only thing that keeps a shower truly watertight is a properly installed waterproofing membrane. The tile sits on top of that membrane and protects it from physical damage — but the membrane is doing the actual waterproofing work.

What Proper Waterproofing Actually Looks Like

We use Schluter® KERDI and related products on every shower we build. This system involves applying a bonded waterproof membrane to the substrate before tile installation, with specific attention to corners, transitions, and any penetrations (drains, faucet openings).

The Schluter system is more involved than simply applying cement board and tiling over it — which is how many contractors still build showers. The difference shows up several years into the life of the shower, when a properly waterproofed shower still looks and performs perfectly and a poorly waterproofed one is starting to show signs of failure.

The Drain: The Most Leak-Prone Point in Any Shower

More shower leaks originate at the drain connection than anywhere else. We use linear and square drains that integrate directly with the waterproofing membrane, creating a continuous watertight system rather than relying on a clamp ring that can loosen or a sealant that will eventually fail.

This is an area where the specification of your drain matters as much as the installation. We're happy to walk you through drain options during an estimate — linear drains in particular have become popular in Greenwood and Blanchard area remodels for their modern look and ease of cleaning.

Niches, Benches, and the Details That Get Left Behind

Shower niches and built-in benches are among the most common sources of tile shower leaks because they're difficult to waterproof correctly. A niche that's not properly sloped and waterproofed on all five interior surfaces will hold water and eventually fail.

We build niches as part of the integrated waterproofing system — not as an afterthought. If you're considering a niche or bench in your shower design, make sure your installer can explain specifically how they waterproof those features.
