Schluter Waterproofing vs. Cement Board: What's the Real Difference?

Why This Comparison Matters

If you've gotten quotes for a tile shower in Shreveport, Bossier City, or East Texas, you've probably heard cement board mentioned as part of the installation. What you may not have heard — unless you asked specifically — is what waterproofing system goes on top of it, or whether any waterproofing membrane is used at all.

This is the question that determines whether your shower holds up for 20 years or starts showing problems in three. And it's a question most contractors would prefer homeowners not know to ask.

What Cement Board Actually Does

Cement board — brands like Durock, HardieBacker, and similar products — is a substrate material. It's dimensionally stable, doesn't rot, and provides a good bonding surface for tile mortar. It replaced greenboard (moisture-resistant drywall) in wet areas because it holds up significantly better when it gets wet.

Here's the critical thing: cement board is not waterproof. It's moisture-resistant. Water can and does absorb into cement board over time, and more importantly, water can pass through the seams between boards, through the fastener holes, and around any penetrations in the substrate.

When that happens — and in a daily-use shower, it will happen — the water has nowhere to go. It accumulates behind the tile, promotes mold growth, saturates the substrate, and eventually causes grout cracking, tile debonding, and water damage to the wall cavity and floor structure behind and below the shower.

Cement board as the only substrate in a tile shower is an installation practice that leads to predictable failures. The industry has moved past it. Not all contractors have.

What Schluter Waterproofing Actually Does

Schluter® Systems — particularly the KERDI membrane and KERDI-BOARD substrate — are a bonded waterproofing approach. Instead of relying on the substrate to resist water, Schluter installs a continuous waterproof membrane that tile mortar bonds directly to.

The KERDI membrane is a polyethylene sheet with fleece webbing on both faces that allows thin-set to bond to it mechanically. It's applied directly to the substrate with thin-set, and seams, corners, and penetrations are overlapped and sealed with the same material. The result is a continuous, bonded waterproof layer behind and beneath the tile that water cannot penetrate regardless of grout joint condition.

That certification matters because the Schluter system works as designed only when it's installed correctly — which means the right thin-set, proper overlap at seams and corners, and specific attention to the drain connection and any niche or bench penetrations.

Where the Drain Connection Is Critical

The drain is the most leak-prone point in any shower. Traditional shower drains use a clamping ring system where the waterproofing membrane is sandwiched between two parts of the drain assembly. That clamping ring can loosen over time. The sealant at the connection will eventually fail.

Schluter's Kerdi-Drain integrates directly with the KERDI membrane. The membrane bonds to a bonding flange that is part of the drain assembly, creating a continuous waterproof connection from substrate to drain with no sealant-dependent joint. Linear drains using the same system have become popular in Shreveport and Bossier City bathroom remodels for both their modern aesthetic and their superior waterproofing geometry.

What This Looks Like in Practice

A shower built with cement board only: The tile looks identical on day one. By year three to five, grout cracking begins. By year seven, tile may begin to debond in wet areas. By year ten, water damage to the wall cavity is often visible. This is not worst-case — this is the predictable outcome of an inadequate system under daily use conditions.

A shower built with Schluter waterproofing: At year ten it looks and performs the same as it did at year one, assuming the tile and grout have been maintained normally.

The upfront cost difference is real — a Schluter installation takes more time and more expensive materials than cement board alone. The long-term cost difference is also real, in the opposite direction.
