How to Choose Tile for a Bathroom You'll Actually Love

Picking tile for a bathroom renovation feels exciting at first — there are so many options. Porcelain, ceramic, natural stone, large format, mosaic, matte, polished. But homeowners in Marshall and across East Texas often tell us the same thing after the job is done: they wish someone had walked them through the choices before they started. Here's that conversation.

Ceramic vs. Porcelain: Does It Actually Matter?

Yes, and the difference matters more in wet spaces. Porcelain is denser and less porous than ceramic, which means it absorbs less water over time. For shower floors and walls, porcelain is almost always the better choice. For a bathroom floor that doesn't see direct water spray, high-quality ceramic works fine and is often more budget-friendly.

What matters more than the tile type, though, is the installation behind it. A poorly waterproofed shower with expensive tile will fail faster than a well-built shower with modest tile. We'll talk more about that in a moment.

Size and Scale: Getting It Right for Your Space

Large-format tiles (24x24 or bigger) have become popular for a reason — they create a clean, modern look and have fewer grout lines, which means less to clean. But they require a very flat, well-prepared subfloor. If there's any variation in your subfloor level, large tiles will rock and crack.

For smaller bathrooms in older Marshall homes, we often recommend medium-format tiles (12x24 or 12x12) or classic subway tile, which gives you more flexibility in working around existing dimensions. In master bathrooms with more square footage, large-format tiles can look stunning.

The best way to test this is to lay out dry tile on your floor before committing — it changes how the scale reads in a real room versus a showroom.

Why Waterproofing is the Most Important Part Nobody Sees

The tile on your shower wall is not what keeps water out of your home. The waterproofing membrane behind it is. This is where a lot of DIY projects and low-bid contractors cut corners — and where problems show up three or four years later as cracked grout, mold behind walls, or water damage to adjacent rooms.

We use Schluter® waterproofing systems on every shower we build. It's a more involved installation that costs more upfront, but it's the reason our showers hold up. If a contractor doesn't mention waterproofing at all in their estimate, ask specifically what they're using. The answer will tell you a lot.

Grout Lines, Patterns, and the Details That Make It Personal

Grout color is one of the most underestimated decisions in a tile project. A light grout with light tile gives a seamless, airy look. A contrasting grout makes each tile pop but also makes grout lines a more prominent part of the visual. Both are valid — it's a matter of what you want to live with every day.

Tile patterns (herringbone, offset, stacked, diagonal) can add a lot of character to a plain tile choice without adding much to material cost. If you're looking for a way to make a budget-friendly tile feel special, the pattern is often where that magic happens.
